KZNSB’S MANDATE AND SCOPE OF WORK

KZN-SB has a broad institutional mandate for programming and operationalization. The organisation endeavours to promote blindness and cross disability interventions throughout KwaZulu-Natal. It operates under the motto: “Unlocking an Inclusive Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People of KwaZulu-Natal Province”. The mandate of the organisation is well stipulated in its Memorandum of Incorporation (MoI), the current legal and social contexts in South Africa and mainly KwaZulu-Natal. The MOI sets the following as the mandate of the organisation:

  1. Protecting and promoting education, employment and other related human rights;
  2. Design / develop, initiate, and maintain projects for the benefit if blind and partially sighted people;
  3. Collect, systemize and disseminate information on all matters relating to blindness and blind and partially sighted persons;
  4. Co-operating with local and international organizations and agencies for purposes of sharing information, advice and assistance;
  5. To respect, uphold and defend all values and human rights as set out in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in force at any given time and in particular to oppose discrimination on the grounds of blindness or any other disability.

Equitable Quality Education for Blind & Partially Sighted People

To advocate, lobby, promote and provide equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for blind and partially sighted people.

Gender Equality

To advocate, lobby and support for the realization of gender equality, empowerment and increased awareness of blind and partially sighted people’s legal rights as provided in the different international and national gender based human rights instruments.

Health and HIV/AIDS

To ensure that blind and partially sighted people have access to a combination of prevention and treatment services and are empowered to protect themselves from HIV and other diseases.
To initiate and provide protection, care and support services within communities and institutions that will ensure independent living of all blind and partially sighted people.

Training and Skills Development

To initiate and implement training and skills development initiatives that contribute towards the improvement of daily living skills, imparting technical capabilities / capacities and the development of entrepreneurial skills amongst blind and partially sighted people.

Economic Empowerment

To initiate and implement economic empowerment strategies that ensures the realisation of full and productive employment, decent work and eradication of all forms of poverty amongst blind and partially sighted people.

Disability Awareness and Transformation Program

To increase the awareness and knowledge of Government Departments, Civil Society Organisations, Private Sector, education institutions, research institutions, Media and the general public on human rights and other related issues of blind and partially sighted people.
To generate and utilise knowledge, evidence and data from research studies and surveys for purposes of documentation, shared learning, disability programming, monitoring and evaluation.

Youth and Children

To initiate strategic anchor projects aimed at job creation and economic freedom of blind and partially sighted youth.

Social Development Program

To initiate and provide protection, care and support services within communities and institutions that will ensure independent living of all blind and partially sighted people.

Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Program

To promote the participation and involvement of blind and partially sighted people in recreational, sports, cultural and arts activities with a view of giving them opportunities to develop their potentials, improving their quality of life, facilitating their active participation in community activities and full integration into the community.

Institutional Capacity Building and economic sustainability

  • To initiate and implement sustainable business strategies for growth and sustainability of the organisation.
  • To transform KZNSB into a robust organisation with resources and systems to enable the delivery of its mandate and be an effective player alongside other stakeholders on disability work.
